Pontotoc is located in northeast Mississippi about 20 miles west of Tupelo and about 15 miles northwest of the Natchez Trace Parkway.
Pontotoc is a Chickasaw word meaning "Land of Hanging Grapes". Chickasaw lived in this until the 1830s when they were forced to move to Indian Territory through Indian Removal.

- Tanglefoot Trail® Pontotoc Gateway Pontotoc is near the mid-point of the Tanglefoot Trail®. The trail is a 43 mile-long, 10 foot wide "rails to trails" route for bicyclists and walkers.
