A 33-mile section of the Natchez Trace Parkway in northeast Mississippi and northwest Alabama is closed for repaving.

The closure and detour between mileposts 293.4 and 326.3 (33 miles) near the towns of Belmont, MS, Tishomingo, MS and Cherokee, AL is closed for repaving.

  • Starting on May 9 2022, 5 miles was closed from milepost 321 to milepost 326.3 (just south of the Tennessee River and the Colbert Ferry site). This created 33 contiguous miles of the Parkway being closed between milepost 293.4 and 326.3 (the Parkway between milepost 293.4 and 321 has been closed for repaving since November 3, 2021 - Phase One).
Let's refer to this 33 mile closure as Phase Two A.
  • When the southernmost 10 miles of the paving project from milepost 293.4 to milepost 303 is finished around mid-June, that section of the Parkway will reopen. The Parkway from milepost 303 to 326.3 will still be closed. Of course, a lot of the timing depends on weather and construction delays.
Let's refer to this 23 miles closure as Phase Two B.
  • When the paving project from milepost 303 to 321 is finished (probably sometime late summer/fall) Phase Three will begin:
The Parkway from milepost 326.3 to 336.3 will be closed for repaving, creating a 15 mile closure from milepost 321 to 336.3. This closure includes the bridge crossing the Tennessee River. The park service already has a 45-mile-long detour for Phase Three - for info and a map, click here.
  • During the paving project no tourism activities are allowed in the closed section of the Parkway. Bicyclists will not be allowed in the closed area.
  • The detour route (see map below) setup by the national park service, marked with signs (Marked Detour Route), takes vehicles on US 72, MS 25 and MS 4. None of these roads are safe for bicycle travel:
    • US 72 is a four-lane, divided highway. Fortunately, there is a wide shoulder in both directions in the Cherokee, AL area that cyclists can bike on. However, large trucks will be driving at high speeds just a few feet away.
    • MS 25 in the Tishomingo and Belmont areas sees a lot of truck traffic and the road has no shoulder.
    • MS 4 also has a lot of truck traffic and no shoulder. I had hoped that part of MS 4 could be used as part of the alternate bike route – but on a recent visit, I saw three logging trucks in five minutes, one passed around me while I was driving 50 mph.
    • We have created an Alternate Bicycle Detour Route on two-lane county roads that are lightly traveled. There is one short (0.2 miles) segment on US 72 where there is a wide shoulder to bike on.
  • If you are biking with a support vehicle we recommend that you shuttle around the paving project using the Marked Detour Route.
  • When cycling always wear brightly colored clothing and have both front and rear lights on your bicycle.
  • The Marked Detour Route for Phase Two A is 48 miles long.
  • The Alternate Bicycle Detour Route for Phase Two A is 43.1 miles long.

Please be aware of dogs on the bicycle route as dogs also like lightly travelled, country roads. You might want to take an air horn to scare dogs away.

There are five maps included here for the Phase Two A closure/detour:

  • An Overview Map that shows the entire area.
  • Four detailed maps dividing the entire area into four sections:
Cherokee, AL area, Alabama / Mississippi state line area, Tishomingo, MS area and Belmont, MS area

Directions for the Alternate Bicycle Detour Route for each section are also included. Below the maps and bicycle route directions are Ride with GPS routes for both "north to south" and "south to north".
