National Trails Day Volunteer Event - Leiper's Fork, Tennessee

The trail event tomorrow (Saturday, June 4) on the Natchez Trace National Scenic Trail at Garrison Creek has been postponed. There is a good possibility of a thunderstorm tomorrow morning, and it would not be good to have people out on the trail. Thank you for your interest in participating. The event will be re-scheduled for late summer or early fall.

Saturday, June 4, is National Trails Day, and the Tennessee Chapter of the Natchez Trace Parkway Association is working with the National Park Service to coordinate a trail mapping and maintenance event on the Highland Rim Section of the Natchez Trace National Scenic Trail from 8 am to 1 pm.

The association's new partner REI will assist. Volunteers can choose from hiking a two-mile section of the trail in pairs and collect photos and data with a GPS device (with a simple click of a button) that NPS will provide, rebuilding a section of split rail fence at an overlook, or building a rustic wooden bench. A picnic lunch will follow the event (bring your own picnic and chair).

Volunteers will meet at Garrison Creek, mile marker 427.6 at 8 am for instructions. Work should begin about 9 am. The hike and maintenance portions will take about two hours. Volunteers should wear appropriate shoes or boots and bring insect repellent. See the flyer below for additional details.

Of course, this event is subject to cancellation if we have thunderstorms, which are currently forecast for Saturday. We are hoping that they do not appear until the afternoon.
