Jackson's Military Road Bicentennial - Tuscumbia, Alabama

Plan ahead to see history brought to life as Natchez Trace Parkway Association Living History begins commemoration of the bicentennial of the 1816-1820 Jackson Military Road.

After winning a battle over the British at New Orleans, General Jackson convinced Congress that the nation needed a military road from Nashville to New Orleans shorter than the Natchez Trace. It took about 300 U.S. soldiers three years to build the road, and the new road aided development of towns such as Columbia, TN, Lawrenceburg, TN, Florence, AL, Russellville, AL, Columbus, MS and Columbia, MS. Development of the new road competed with the Natchez Trace for mail service and traffic, but both roads served to encourage the great migration of settlers to the Southwestern Territory.
