The Great Big Yam Potatoes Old-Time Music Gathering and Fiddle Contest returns for the ninth year to Historic Jefferson College near Natchez, MS on Saturday, May 20th. This free event celebrates the fiddle and string band music played by Mississippi musicians at dances and on front porches in the days before radio.

Enjoy a day full of live acoustic music featuring some of the region’s finest traditional musicians performing on the outdoor stage.

The old-time fiddle contest gets underway in the main building at 10 a.m. with musicians ages 17 and under competing. Adult fiddlers take to the stage after lunch. Find up-to-date rules, registration information and an event schedule at the website,

Music lovers will hear “authentic old-time fiddling, Mississippi style” at this year’s gathering, said Robert Gray, a member of the Mississippi Fiddlers Association, organizers of the gathering. The fiddle contest is always exciting, featuring “a wealth of Mississippi material and early country fiddling, not to be missed.“

A local vender will be onsite selling lunch.

Water and cold drinks will be sold throughout the day. Picnicking is welcome on the college grounds.

Primitive camping is available Friday and Saturday night. This is an alcohol-free event.
