John Murrell and Land Pirates of the Natchez Trace - Franklin, Tennessee

Natchez Trace historian Tony Turnbow will discuss John Murrell and Land Pirates of the Natchez Trace or When Pirates Roamed Franklin, Tennessee on September 7 from 6pm - 7:30pm.

This event is part of the Warwick Lecture Series presented by the Heritage Foundation of Williamson County, Tennessee.

The historic Natchez Trace was a place of myth and legend even during its own time. Among its dangers, notorious land pirates preyed on unsuspecting travelers. One of the most feared of the “banditti” was John Murrell, who was raised in Williamson County. Murrell was rumored to control an organized crime organization of over one thousand men.

Tony Turnbow, a Franklin lawyer, has studied the old Natchez Trace for more than thirty years and has written several books about the history of the Old Trace.
