Wednesday April 7, 2021 - Saturday April 10, 2021

Rainwater Observatory is gearing up for its annual Midsouth Stargaze coming up April 7-10, 2021! This event attracts amateur and professional astronomers from around the country. It is held under one of the few remaining dark skies in the southeastern United States and just off the beautiful Natchez Trace Parkway near the village of French Camp, Mississippi.

Due to Covid restrictions and precautions, the event will be limited to outdoor observing and imaging only with no indoor presentations. The two main buildings at the base of the hill will be closed except for the bathrooms and showers, but the telescope buildings on top of the hill will be available. Personal telescopes and tents will need to be spaced 15 feet apart on top of the hill. Masks are suggested outdoors but will be mandatory while accessing the main building offering men’s and women’s showers and bathrooms. Efforts will be made to disinfect these areas frequently. Tables and chairs will be provided under the pavilion area as well as a microwave, coffee maker, DVD player, LCD video projector and other amenities. The bunkhouse will be unavailable but camping around the facility and on the hill will be permitted on a first come first serve basis. There is also a Bed and Breakfast, beautiful new Council House restaurant, Lodge, Memphis Guest House and other additional lodging located within a mile of the observatory.

Rainwater is home to one of the largest collections of powerful telescopes in the southeast. We have some new exciting indoor exhibits and beautiful custom built exhibit cases with an impressive new meteorite collection. The collection contains objects such as a Mars meteorite, a large shatter cone, tektites and a piece of the Chelyabinsk meteorite that hit Russia in 2013! In addition, we have exhibits featuring an impressive collection of rocks, minerals, asteroid models, space art exhibit and other astronomy related displays. We also have a large camping area with a pavilion, picnic tables, amphitheater, men's and women's showers and bathrooms, WIFI access, all new electrical outlets on the hill and camp area, 14 bed air conditioned bunk house, four new grills and five campfire pit areas with surround seating as well as other camping areas around the observatory hill. There is a Bed and Breakfast, Council House Restaurant, Lodge, Memphis Guest House and other additional lodging located within a mile of the observatory.
